Details On Tower Crane Inspections

By Lila Bryant

A large number of tools and equipment is applied in construction sites today. A crane fall under the category of the most valuable machines used for construction. Research indicates that most of the accidents that result in construction sites are related to hoists. Tower crane inspections should therefore be performed on a regular basis so as to minimize the occurrence of accidents.

Advancement in technology has made it possible for manufacturers to produce lifting machines which are lighter and stronger. Over the last two decades, there has been much improvement on factor like effective radius, capacity and speed. This has made the use of cranes to be endorsed by many constructors. Since there use is inevitable, it is important for all people that take part in construction to acquire knowledge regarding the use of the same.

There has been major upgrades in the technology that is utilized in hoisting and it is for this matter that professionals who carry out inspections should keep on training. By doing so, they will be able to inspect even the latest crane models to the required standards. Through proper inspection, it will be possible to identify problems that lead to unsafe conditions.

If the preventive maintenance applied for hoists is poor, then there will be increased number of mechanical failures. What leads to poor maintenance is assessments being carried by improperly trained inspectors because they are not able to point out all faults correctly. A given crane is also likely to face mechanical failure if the intervals of inspections are too large as compared to the work it handles.

Currently, there is a wide range of lifting machines in the market. There are those that are used for general purposes while others are tailored for particular activities. Cranes also come in different sizes and there is many types of controls that are employed by manufacturers. This creates need for all inspectors to undergo specialized training so that they are in a position to handle various kinds of machines available.

Inspectors are not only required to have knowledge regarding on how to assess machines but they should be conversant with rules that govern activities in a certain site. It is also required that anyone working in the site gets to know the restrictions that have been set by the inspectors for the sake of safety. It is important that an inspector understands how activities are conducted in the site before he commences his job.

It is important that contractors follow specifications outlined by the producer of a given machine. If there is no specifications from the producer, then it is only a certified engineer who can specify them. Once the engineer indicates the suitable load capacities as well operating speed, it is the duty of an inspector to see that they are followed.

It is not possible to identify the exact conditions under which a machine will operate. This is why the manufacturers only give an estimate of the duration that an equipment can go without inspection. Machines that are used for long hours are supposed to be inspected more often.
